Recent trends in industrial transformation

A literature review on skills and the future of work

2024 – – This article outlines developments and trends in the industry that stem from the adoption of digital technology and climate ambitions.

Research questions

The central question is: what will be the impact of these transformations on work in the future, until 2035? More precisely: How do they shape industrial companies and workplaces? How are these trends changing jobs and required skills?

Method

The study involved a systematic literature review using the PRISMA method. The researchers started a search in February 2024 with broad terms around ‘digital’ and ‘green’ in Sciencedirect and the Web of Science.

This literature review is part of a broader European research project on ‘Industrial transformation’. The study will ultimately enable the development of exploratory scenarios for the development of new jobs and required knowledge and skills.
